The Numbers of users are more than windows Windows 8 & Vista Combined

Security company Avast has published the global Windows usage data as a part of the PC Trends Report (PDF Document) for the first quarter of 2017, revealing that Windows 7 has continued to lead the market with a share close to 50 per cent.

While it is important to note the fact that these figures come from computers running on Avast, they do line up with the data provided by research firms whose main activity is monitoring system usage, so there is a good chance that the data is accurate.
According to Avast, the operating system launched in 2009 is currently powering more than 56 million computers where its antivirus product is installed, and this means a market share of 48.35 per cent
The security firm states that Windows 10 is growing and has managed to reach a share of 30.46 per cent, which accounts for slightly over 35 million devices running Avast security software.
The worrying fact here is that Windows XP, which was launched in 2001, no longer receives security updates post April 2014, is still running on more than 6.5 million computers. This means that it has a share of 5.64 per cent which is more than Windows 8 (2.51 per cent) and Windows Vista (2.08 per cent) combined.

Windows 8 was launched in 2012 as Microsoft’s new revolution, but its small market share is mostly because of most users choosing the free upgrade to Windows 8.1. The OS launched one year later and has a share of 10.96 per cent, which represents 12.7 million PCs running Avast.

Windows Vista is also reaching the end of its support cycle next month, which means users who are still running this OS (2 million according to Avast), will have already started planning its upgrade. Windows 10 is the safest bet right now, as Windows 7 itself is also projected to reach EOL in January 2020.

How to tether and Portable hotspot via USB Cable in Samsung Mobile

How to tether and Portable hotspot via USB Cable in Samsung Mobile

I have recently moved house and as anyone who moves house will know the internet connection they have won't be instantly activated at their new home. Fortunately thanks the "The One Plan" from 3 I've not been without internet thanks to the ability to tether that the plan includes.

Tethering, for simplicity terms is where a laptop (or computer, or games console, etc) shares the internet signal that the phone is using. Effectively it uses the phone as a modem. You can tether either by bluetooth or by USB

This guide will show you how to tether with a Samsung Galaxy S4 via a USB cable (that now comes as standard as part of the phones charger). Though before we go any further there are a few things to be aware of.

Firstly your phone will need to be picking up a mobile internet signal, secondly you will need to have your phone connected to whichever device you want to use (via USB) and thirdly you can incur data charges (and a lot of them for tethering) so make sure your plan allows tethering!

To start you will need to open up the phone's "Settings" menu. If you don't know how yo do this, you will need to go to a home scree and press the phone's "Menu" button, then select "Settings".

The first screen you will see in the settings screen is the "Connections" screen which will look like the screenshot on the right hand side. The first option you need to select from this menu is "More networks".

The screen you will then be taken to should look like the one on the left with 4 options. The one you need to select at this point is the 3rd one down, the one called "Tethering and portable hotspot".

After selecting the "Tethering and portable hotspot" option will see a new menu with 4 options (including "Help") from this set of options click on "USB tethering" and make sure a little tick goes in to the box.

After you've ticked the "USB tethering" option you should notice that not only has the box got a tick in but that a new icon has appeared at the top of your screen (a little blue one that you can see in the bottom screen on the left). This means the phone is sharing a connection with your device.

Now the next step depends on what you are connecting it to. For a laptop or computer your device should treat the connection as a simple wired connection, as if you were using a USB modem (because that's effectively what you are doing) for other devices, i.e and Xbox or a Wii things may be a little more complicated (unfortunately we've not tested those).

When you are done tethering you merely need to unplug the cable from your phone or untick the "USB tethering" check box.

Once again, before you use this guide, be aware, tethering can run up major data charges. Please make sure you are on a plan that allows tethering and make sure you stay inside your limits.

Hong Kong's first female leader a 'tilted bridge' over troubled water

HONG KONG: Carrie Lam, who won an election to become Hong Kong's first female chief executive on Sunday, is a former student activist who climbed the rungs of the civil service over 36 years, and a tough, capable and possibly divisive Beijing-backed leader.Lam, 59, most recently Hong Kong's number two official, has to unify the Chinese-ruled city as public resentment swells at Beijing's growing interference in its affairs despite being promised a high degree of autonomy. She also has to reinvigorate the economy and address growing social inequalities and high property prices. Several sources who have worked with Lam say she's intelligent, hard-working and able to push controversial government policies, earning her the trust of Beijing factions who strongly lobbied for votes on her behalf. But her hardline and pro-Beijing tendencies, say critics and opposition democrats, risk sowing further social divisions in the former British colony that returned to China 20 years ago under a "once country, two systems" formula that guarantees it wide-ranging freedoms. "Carrie Lam .. is a nightmare for Hong Kong," said student activist Joshua Wong, 20, one of the leaders of the student-led "Umbrella Movement" protests in 2014 which blocked the streets for 79 days demanding full democracy.
"Theoretically, the chief executive is a bridge between the central government and the Hong Kong people. But Lam will be a tilted bridge. She will only tell us what Beijing wants, and won't reflect what the people want to the communist regime." Lam, 59, dubbed "the fighter" by media, was once the most popular official in the cabinet of staunchly pro-Beijing incumbent chief executive, Leung Chun-ying, who in 2012 won a similar election restricted to just 1,200 voters.
"Picking Carrie as chief secretary was Leung's best appointment," said a senior government official who declined to be identified because he was not authorised to speak to the media. But she could also sometimes be a "bully", he added. Softer Image Lam's popularity began to slip just as a younger generation of protesters rose to prominence, and tumbled further during the course of her election campaign this year. Her attempt to push through a planned Palace Museum in Hong Kong, showing artefacts from the museum in Beijing's Forbidden City, was criticised for being presented as a done deal without public consultation, highlighting what some describe as her "autocratic" style, according to a source who knows her. She is not well regarded by the opposition democratic camp, with most of the 300 or so democrats seen having voted for former Financial Secretary John Tsang. The bespectacled Lam was also criticised by student leaders for being "vague" after their televised meeting failed to defuse the 2014 protests. The demonstration ran out of steam two months later and ended with police clearing the streets. During her campaign, Lam attempted to present a softer, more populist image, but was ridiculed for gaffes including not appearing to know how to use subway turnstiles. She was also lampooned for a late-night hunt for toilet paper which took her to her posh former home on the Peak after she failed to find any at a convenience store.

The Program was first debuted with Google’s video caption back in 2006

YouTube will now be enrolling its machine learning program to detect sound effects in videos and add caption such as [Applause], [Music] and [LAUGHTER] as they serve as a meaningful context for viewers who are deaf and hard of hearing.

The program was first debuted with Google’s video caption back in 2006 and was later taken up to 'another level' with automated caption on YouTube. YouTube is further enhancing the program by including captions for sound effects, after the success of the initial one.
According to a statement in a blogpost by YouTube, “the number of videos with automatic captions now exceeds a staggering 1 billion. Moreover, people watch video with automatic captions more than 15 million times per day.”
To see the sound effect captioning system in action, user will need to click on the ‘CC’ button that appears on bottom-right of YouTube’s video.
“Future challenges might include adding other common sound classes like ringing, barking and knocking, which present particular problems,” YouTube said in a blogpost.

US and UK laptop bans on some Middle East flights come into effect

US and UK laptop bans on some Middle East flights come into effect

A ban on laptops and tablets in cabin baggage on flights from Turkey and some countries in the Middle East and North Africa to the US and UK has come into effect.
Officials say devices "larger than a smartphone" must travel in the hold because of an increased risk that they could contain explosives.
At least one airline is allowing devices to be used up until boarding.
The US ban covers eight countries, while the UK restrictions apply to six.
Nine airlines from eight countries - Turkey, Morocco, Jordan, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait - are affected by the US ban. They operate about 50 flights a day to the US.

Laptop ban: What about the parents?
Will new US and UK flight rules affect me?
Somali plane bomb: What happened?
UAE airline Emirates is offering complimentary packing and shipping services at gates to enable passengers to use their electronic devices after check-in and until boarding.
That also means passengers flying on two-leg trips from other countries to the US through Dubai can use their laptops on the first leg of their flights.
The UK ban meanwhile affects all flights out of Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and Lebanon.
The British ban applies to any device, including smartphones, larger than 16cm (6.3in) long, 9.3cm (3.7in) wide or 1.5cm (0.6in) deep. However, most phones will be smaller than the limit.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged the US and UK to lift the bans as soon as possible.
The US Department for Homeland Security has cited attacks on planes and airports over the past two years as the reason for the ban,
Bombs, it said, had been hidden in such items as a soft drink can, used in the downing of a Russian airliner over Egypt in October 2015 with the loss of 224 lives, and the laptop used in the unsuccessful Somali attack last year.
European security experts are to meet next week to discuss the US and UK bans, the Guardian newspaper reported.
Royal Jordanian Airlines has tweeted suggestions of things to do during a long flight instead of using an electronic device.

It followed up with another tweet suggesting that passengers "do what we Jordanians do best - stare at each other!"
Aviation experts say the ban could hit airline profits as risks include a fall in passenger numbers, decreasing customer satisfaction and higher costs linked to screening baggage.

Google advertising row spreads to US brands

Google advertising row spreads to US brands

At least four major US firms have pulled millions of dollars in advertising from Google’s platform amid rows over extremist content.
The Time reported that telecoms firms AT&T and Verizon, as well as car rental company Enterprise and pharmaceutical giant GSK, have withdrawn all non-search advertising.

An investigation by the newspaper found major brands were appearing next to YouTube videos promoting extremist views - generating revenues for the creators.
The company has apologized and promised better tools for advertisers.

Despite Google’s efforts to contain the row, which began in the UK earlier this week, it appears to have now caught the attention of the US advertising industry - creating a huge problem for Google as it seeks to reassure brands their ad spend is not funding hate groups.
